Did they say, "How can we make this stupid POS show even more ridiculous?"

They set this up with the Master regenerating as Missy. Up 'til they saw the reaction to that character (which was generally enthusiastic) I don't think they'd have considered it.

Michelle Gomez's excellent portrayal gets "an assist" for this.

Also, the female companions have become bigger and bigger parts of the stories. Heck, the one before the current one turned into an immortal in a time machine with another immortal woman as her partner.

And the most current one appears to be an immortal now too.

David Tennant (the Tenth Doctor) was a big booster of her for the role. Worked with her on Broadchurch. And the Broadchurch creator is now in charge of Dr. Who.

I think the huge success of the Wonder Woman movie was also a factor in picking a woman for the 13th Doctor.

And everyone claiming "this is the end" forgets how the same was said "when that old guy" (Capaldi) took over the role from the previous two young guys (in Smith's case, very young).

After a somewhat rough start (or at least a period of adjustment by the audience), he turned out to be a pretty good choice.

The show has to guard against getting in a rut. Now we'll see how they manage to keep the "Essential Doctor" underneath with the new personality and gender.

It's all going to come down to, as usual, scripts and acting talent.

It probably helped. Also, just about everyone ever associated with Dr. Who was making a big push for this, including Capaldi.

Had they chosen literally any other female on the planet, I would probably have been pissed.
There is a lot riding on this. If they don't have good stories, it will end the show for another decade...or more.

Why does she look so familiar to me? I looked at her IMDB and wiki and I still can't figure out where I have seen her.
