  • Marijuana Questions

Back before pot was legal anywhere I used to hear these people talk about how great the plant was other than to get high with. You can save the forests because it's better to make paper with. You can make clothes from hemp and rope strong enough to tow smurph's trailer. They had 101 uses for the plant.

Their critics said that they just wanted to get high and they didn't really care about all those other uses.

My question is, since it's legal in places now, are there any plans for rope, paper and clothes factories?

Woody Harrelson was always a huge proponent of hemp. I'm sure he also smoked more than his fair share too.

They used to say that it could be grown with very little thc in it and the only thing keeping them from making all kinds of things were the drug laws. Well now that it's legal in a large part of the country, I want to see some of these wonderful products.

I am not sure that I would say it is legal in a large part of the country yet. It is in a handful of western states and I don't think it is legal in any states east of the Mississippi. It is also technically illegal nationwide under federal law. General Sessions could become a major nuisance in the legalized states. The marijuana businesses are still having major cash management issues because the banks are refusing to open the normal accounts that other businesses have because of the federal laws.

The biggest problem is that the hemp plant is still a federally illegal plant to cultivate for any reason, whatever the states allow. There's that whole Commerce Clause issue. So most legal hemp products come from processed hemp grown outside the US and imported here. Not enough is legally grown here in the US to supply manufacturing needs, especially of some of the things you mention, like paper and clothing. Remember, too, that there is a plant strain difference between THC grade marijuana for smoking, but is lousy for making paper and clothing, and commercial hemp, which is lousy for THC (you'd have to smoke literally pounds of it for an indifferent high). The Feds don't distinguish between them, and AG Sessions doesn't care, so probably nothing will be done to assist hemp agriculture until he's gone and someone more reasonable is in his place.

Paper made from hemp is a much longer lasting and much less yellowing paper than what's made from wood pulp. Whether that had anything to do with Hearst and Dupont is questionable. But I know most mariners would love to have hemp rope back. While nylon and other plastics make a longer lasting rope, they are no pleasure on the hands and damaging on the tackle. Hemp rope is better in all regards, except in length of service, it would have to be replaced more often. Sisal is a poor substitute.

I recently updated my stock portfolios to include several Canadian companies that grow marijuana. I also invested in a company that produces a fertilizer specifically designed for the marijuana plant.
It's gonna go through the roof, folks. Get in early if you can!
