Since I already have a masters, I could get the phd done in 3 years. But they've offered me funding for 5 years, and I'm thinking I'll take it. They offer a double phd in HPS and cognitive science, and I'm thinking I'll take that opportunity. Basically, it's one phd in two subjects, but I only have to do one dissertation, so long as the dissertation touches on both fields and my committee is half HPS, half cognitive science.

My research so far has been on the theory of evolution, and how scientists use analogies and metaphors in their reasoning. One big name in this field, Doug Hofstadter, teaches here at IU. I haven't had a chance to speak to him yet, but hopefully I'll get to while I'm here.

Yeah, I'm heading back to Lincoln on Wednesday I think. I'm driving all over ND this coming week collecting soil samples..not my favorite activity. How long is the phd program you're in supposed to be, and do you have any idea what you're going to do your dissertation on?

I start at IU this coming fall. I just moved up to Bloomington this summer.

Are you still in North Dakota?

Didn't even think to look for a response... When did you start your phd at IU? And I'm sure OU's gonna be just fine this year.

The Sooners look great everywhere except the O-line, which is a big question mark. Whether or not their 4 new starters gel will determine whether they make another run at the NC or not.

I actually got my masters at OSU. But when applying to phd programs, OU went a long way to get me to join their program. They offered me their presidential fellowship, and invited me to tour the history of science collection with Richard Dawkins, and then to meet him again at a reception before his speech in Norman. I eventually had to turn them down, though, because I thought IU's program was a better fit for me.
