Do you regard protectionism as a good trade policy?

No, not generally. What passes for free trade often is not, tho. A nation with environmental laws will struggle to compete against one without. Ditto for labor laws.

German manufacturing is generally tip-top. Wrapping itself within a cuddly blanket of a tanking currency is a smart play. And a tough one to beat, if one is comitted to "free trade".

Trump was probably coked up and bangin' cheerleaders the day they discussed trade policy @ Exeter.

German companies export more cars from the US than the 'big 3' US car manufacturers.

Yeah, you said that before. VW is on a tear right now.

Yes, the point is they're just making better cars. and they're doing it more efficiently. They can make them in the US and still outcompete your manufacturers, and they can make them in Germany while paying their workers more than yours get, but fair trade to you means levelling that playing field through tariffs? Y'all will just buy more of what they already make there since it will become more expensive to export them due to reciprocal tariffs. The cost of increasing domestic market share through penalising foreigners who do it better would be decreased export market share and more expensive cars for Americans.

I buy American-made cars. That's why I buy Hondas and Toyotas, which are more often than not made right here with U.S. workers and U.S. parts. Unlike Fords and such that are often made in Canada and Mexico with their workers and parts from wherever.

My Chevy truck was made in Indiana and my Camaro was made in Canada. GM has since started making new Camaros in Michigan

While its true that a some models are made outside of the USA many are still assembled right here. Detroit alone has numerous assembly plants.

Just read in Boston Herald that Trump kids vacation to Aspen will require the services of 100 S.S, agents,

Are Beavis and Butthead getting that many death threats or is it the multitude of Ivanka stalkers lying in wait ready to verbally assault her?

Maybe the Donald is still getting kickbacks from a union.
