  • Early elections??

    Hammy, thoughts?
In a dramatic statement on the steps of Downing Street, the Prime Minister fired the starting gun on a poll that she hopes will deliver her an unassailable majority to shape the country's future.

Pretty straightforward, the main opposition parties are in a mess. The Lib Dems haven't recovered from being in a coalition with the Conservatives an election back and Labour's primary system has thrown up a disastrous joke of a leader who refuses to quit, though he'll be forced to after the forthcoming election failure. She's basically just making a fairly safe bet that she can get an increased majority, something of an electoral mandate (she was picked by conservative party MPs after cameron quit), and it will give her a 5 year term rather than a mandatory election in 2020. They'll lose big in Scotland but they always do. After the election she'll claim a mandate for forcing a hard Brexit and the Doom will come to Valyria.

edit: Also it'll reduce the pressure to call an election when people will actually be demanding one, nearing the end of the 2 year negotiation when it is clear what a disastrous failure the negotiations will be for us. By that point there's a fair chance one of the opposition parties will have got its shit together and will have a very clear issue to run on.

But on a lighter note, Thai people take a refreshingly relaxed view of health and safety

This will give the Remainers a sort of second crack at Brexit, no? Aside from Corbyn being a disaster, it still seems like a risky move on her part.

Sure, it does kinda give a second crack at the brexit vote, now a lot of the lies have been exposed, but the thing is a conservative victory is pretty much guaranteed right now just through the failings of the opposition. It would be like Trump calling a snap rematch election with the Hilldawg as his opponent and declaring it meant full support for all his policies if he won. Personally I'll be taking an active role in local politics for the first time in my life trying to get an anti brexit MP in here, but this is a very safe conservative seat and they'll be running Theresa Villiers.

It's basically to give at least the illusion of a real mandate for her hard brexit position.

I think the SNP leader is jumping the gun there, no one would really know what they're voting for yet. Kinda the problem they had last time around, with their guys saying they'd keep and control the pound and stay in the EU and the people who'd actually decide that saying nuh uh. It's up to Westminster to call a second referendum though, and they won't until the upheaval is over. Eventually post brexit I think both Scotland and NI would jump ship for the EU. Unless the Frenchies can bring it down from within first, or Italy finally goes tits up.

He did seem inclined to keep his mouth open, the thai guy doing the show put his head in it. If you want it to snap, the trick appears to be to touch the top or bottom of the mouth with a bamboo stick while standing well back.

I think people watch these shows for basically the same reason you watch NASCAR.
