        As I've said before, I'm out of that game now. Left academia for a more boring but more stable and lucrative option. You've got to be almost fanatic levels of dedicated to the work to stick with it; the payoff is just so piss poor.

          Paid summers off? A guaranteed job now matter how bad you fuck up? Paid time off to travel & write poetry? You must not be doing it right. Maybe you should have spent more time publishing another paper on lesbian fatty sexual habits than posting here.

            If you're trying for a research career there are no summers off. Most of them teach as part of the tenure contract - if they're lucky enough to even get one - and research, mentor, and manage labs on top of that. Pay levels are absolute shit, given the level of investment required to reach those positions. And hours are very, very long. For most serious research fields, at least, it's nothing like the cushy job that you imagine it to be. It's a giant ripoff, really.
