Default Goodell is going to ax the probowl

    http://espn.go.com/chicago/nfl/story...wl-sources-say

Many players who will be selected during this week's NFL draft are regarded as future Pro Bowl selections, but the game itself likely will be suspended this season and beyond, according to league sources.

The next Pro Bowl is scheduled the week before the Super Bowl in New Orleans on Feb. 3, but a game site has not been listed because of its precarious status, sources added.

Sources say that NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, who has previously voiced his displeasure with the lack of competitiveness in recent Pro Bowl games, is strongly considering suspending this year's game, sources say.

Beyond 2013, another league source believes the Pro Bowl is "DOA (dead on arrival)."

If the game is suspended, the league still would have a Pro Bowl balloting process to identify the season's top players and would direct teams to negotiate Pro Bowl clauses into player contracts and to honor Pro Bowl incentive clauses to avoid any serious conflict with the players association. Those players also likely would be honored in some fashion during Super Bowl week.

Goodell recently has asked players for suggestions to make the game more attractive but has yet to embrace a solution, sources said.

Even those within the league who support continuance of the game have been unable to persuade Goodell that the game has merit alone on reasonably strong television ratings.

However, the diminishing quality of play has weighed more heavily on the commissioner, who believes it reflects poorly on the league and its players. Sources say Goodell does not hold any ill-will toward the players' lackluster effort because of player safety issues.

Goodell said in February that eliminating the game was under consideration. In an appearance on ESPN Radio's "Mike and Mike in the Morning" on Super Bowl Sunday, he said the league must address the quality of the game and even said he would consider eliminating it if it can't be improved upon.

The AFC routed the NFC 59-41 in last season's Pro Bowl, which drew boos at Aloha Stadium in Honolulu for its lack of early intensity.
    ..................

Meh, Nothing but a revenue grab by Goodell and the owners.

There is no reason not to have the probowl as it pays for it's self and does offer up revenue to the league after broadcast rights, sponsorships, and merchandising.

It means a lot more to Hawaii in the form of tourism and the money it pumps into their state economy in the form of their general use tax where everything is taxed.

So how much will Hawaii be willing to pay in "incentives" to the league to keep the game in Hawaii?

The owners are looking at a nine year stretch where they will do everything in their power to maximize revenue from "alternative" sources that they do not have to share with the players..when the new CBA comes up and the union wants a bigger slice of the pie, the owners will claim all sources have been tapped and there's little room for expansion in the future after pocketing 9 years of additional monies.

All thats left is to see how long it takes Hawaii to flinch, but a probowl in one of the continuous states would bolster the league as well if Hawaii insists on calling Goodells bluff.

I would rather play a flag football scrimmage on the beach, it is safer.

    Sincerely,

I would opt for a round robin of NFL cheerleaders playing flag football.

Yeah, just have a ceremony honoring the players on Superbowl week.

Too much risk of destroying careers via injury in an actual game, even the teams shouldn't want to risk that.

P.S. Folks could blow out knees in a flag-football game too.

Not sure how I feel about this. I never want to see what we saw last year, and I hate the game being before the Superbowl, but that is not to say there is some solution here other than getting rid of it.

    Guarantee the contracts.

So, no. There is no way to save it.

Most professional All Star games are. The difference is that the NBA, NHL and MLB make the game a multi day experience and hold them, for the most part, in an obtainable location for most fans. They are also mid season and not at the end or after the season.

Pull a blanket insurance policy on a career ending injury payable to the player and stipulate any salary cap implication null and void for a team with players in the probowl. Then offer gold grills for the winners.

The teams still get a screwing if they lose one of their established stars. Less wins, less attendance, less money?

It's not like someone is going to die every probowl.

It's a possibility if they start letting Detroit Lion players in.

Remember what happened the last time a Seahawk played in a pro bowl?
